Called a “harper among harpists” by the Irish press, Haines has developed a unique approach to the lever harp. She has honed a source of song-making that showcases diverse studies. Her primary influences range from traditional songs to classical, improvisational, experimental and contemporary music.
Performing on piano, harp and accordion, she has collaborated with Sue Pilla in their group WINDHARP, the Vanaver Caravan, Laura Simms, Steve Gorn, Guy Klusevek, Layne Redmond, Tommy Hayes, and Glen Velez. She created experimental radio pieces for New American Radio: Earthworks: Voices of Young People, Voices of the Elders, as well as collaborating with numerous dancers for dance and music improvisations.
Haines has immersed herself in words that have been passed down through the ages – words that “convey the wisdom of the Earth.” Her signature composition, Thunder: Perfect Mind, based on year of meditation on a text from the Nag Hammadi Library, a Coptic manuscript from approximately 350 CE. Reflects the influence of sung poetry in traditional music.
Her improvisational skills and understanding of the power of music in healing led her to a career as a music therapist.
First Prize Winner for harp and voice at the O’Carolan Festival, Keadue, Ireland, her recordings as composer/performer include: HER Songs; THUNDER: Perfect Mind; ODYSSEY; WIND/WATER/LIGHT. She has recorded with Pauline Oliveros, Tommy Hayes, The Roots, Sue Pilla, Susan Werner, Laura Simms, Kay Gardner and Ubaka Hill.
